Born in Germany, Jacobs came to America in 1923 and started working with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1925, where he stayed for more than 60 years. Among Jacobs' many signatures was his use of a 2' by 3' miniature car he built himself, and his trained Chihuahua "Knucklehead." In 1966 his face was depicted on a United States Postal Service stamp, and in 1968 he was a founding professor at the Clown College of the Ringling Circus in Venice, Florida.
